Paul Grothouse founded Grothouse Lumber in 1994. The unsurpassed design and construction capabilities of Grothouse Lumber are a direct result of his extensive experience in woodworking and engineering. His exposure to woodworking began as a child watching his father (a highly respected period furniture maker) restore their 18th century home on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay. As a teenager, he worked on a construction team building homes, and later purchased a portable sawmill to finance his college tuition. He began sawing lumber, learning how to properly saw logs into boards, and the proper drying techniques. He earned an Engineering degree at Virginia Tech and worked at Lutron Electronics, the undisputed leader in lighting controls, holding jobs from product management to work as their quality control and process control manager and managing the purchasing department of a custom shade company Lutron owns. During this period he continued to saw custom sized lumber on weekends for local craftsmen and build custom furniture, and he began to create wood butcher blocks to customer requests. The tremendous demand for Grothouse butcher blocks quickly became a full time job for Paul. His extensive experience in lumber, building, engineering, quality and process control is the ideal combination of talents to manage Grothouse Lumber.
Today the company operates out of a modern 20,000 sqft facility on the farm of Paul & Denise Grothouse in Pennsylvania. Basic wood countertops and butcher blocks are created impeccably. Complex designs, high quality woods sourced from around the world, intricate shapes and monolithic sizes are an everyday occurrence. Whether you are a homeowner seeking to purchase a single item, or a designer looking to produce signature pieces, Grothouse lumber can construct pieces that will meet or exceed your expectations.

roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
