NKBA Best Kitchen Award 2013 features Wenge Wood Countertops

Congratulations to Wendy F. Johnson, CKD, CBD of Designs for Living, for winning NKBA Best Kitchen Award. The large kitchen is in a new home that overlooks a golf course. Her breathtaking design includes products from Wolf, Miele Subzero Bentwood, and Thinkglass. A wenge countertop crafted by Grothouse was used in the baking station and a separate dining island. Wendy Johnson mixed warm wood and stainless cabinetry to add drama to the design. “Wenge with a permanent finish adds a warm touch to the dining Island. Terrazzo provides a great pattern and total functionality in the working and cooking spaces. Flash Back Friday ~ Building Grothouse ~ 2004

This Friday we are flashing back to the construction of our shops. Grothouse Employees worked together to construct two shop buildings. Teamwork and skilled craftsmanship were the key components to our success.

While helping to build the shops, the Grothouse workforce, with their outstanding work ethic, functioned as a cohesive team and crafted wood countertops, butcher blocks, bar tops, and tables for clients. It is an honor for Grothouse to have had our staff a part of the construction of the shops they work in every single day.

Custom Butcher Block Countertop Crafted by Grothouse to look like Piano Keyboard

A Custom Butcher Block Countertop was crafted to look like a piano keyboard. The countertop is made of Wenge in Butcher Block with Maple Edge Grain construction style. Designed by homeowners in Kansas City, their creative design became a stunning and exclusive countertop. Food Safe Mineral Oil was applied as the countertop’s finish. The Countertop Edge Profile is a 1/8″ Roundover on all exposed sides, dado to overlap stone. Grothouse was extremely proud to be a part of this design. Students from Lehigh Career and Technical Institute toured The Grothouse Lumber Company

Paul Grothouse gave a tour of the shop where solid wood countertops, bar tops, and tables are made, to students from the local school Lehigh Career and Technical Institute Special Needs Class. Escorted by Jeffrey Dell and Onalise Witty, the students from the Service Occupation Cluster focus on Indoor and Outdoor Maintenance. Their tour of the facility helped them discover how their skills can be applied in a manufacturing environment. As they toured the facility, they were happy to find that a lot of skills they do have can be used for maintenance at the shop. As a souvenir, students picked out a piece of wood to take home with them. It was an enjoyable day for all.

Pastore™ Waterfall Wood Countertops by Grothouse Featured on This Old House

Waterfall Wood Countertops by Grothouse were included in episode 13 of This Old House®, The Cambridge Project 2012. The countertops were an integral part of the kitchen designed by Kathy Marshall of K Marshall Design located in Wenham, MA. The Waterfall Wood Countertop graces the large kitchen island, measuring an incredible 11-1/2″ foot long and includes a beautiful Quartz inset counter that surrounds the integrated undermount sink. The countertop was constructed by Grothouse of solid Maple wood, with Dovetail Keys to enhance the mitered edges. The countertop is finished with Durata® finish, a waterproof and maintenance free permanent wood finish.

How Professionals Build Waterfall Wood Countertops Pastore™ Style

Waterfall Wood Countertops are described as having legs that extend from the countertop giving the appearance of one fluid piece. Grothouse refers to this style of countertop Pastore™. They can be tricky to manufacture as precision is of utmost importance to give the desired result. Paul Grothouse walks Norm Abram through the process on Episode 13 of This Old House®, The Cambridge Project 2012. Paul and his team of craftsmen demonstrate how the piece is assembled and finished in the Grothouse workshop.

Installing Waterfall Wood Countertops

The Waterfall Wood Countertop crafted for the large kitchen island weighs a staggering 600 pounds and getting into the narrow home takes careful consideration and an army of men to carry. Tom Silva decides the best path is to carry the countertop through a window. Tom also explains how to scribe the legs of the waterfall countertop to accommodate an uneven floor. The scribing assures the waterfall wood countertop has a level surface. The Waterfall Wood Countertop and the Quartz countertop are secured in place to form the centerpiece of the kitchen space.

This episode marks the fourth appearance for the Lehigh Valley based wood surfaces manufacturer. Jake W Joins Grothouse Team Crafting Wood Countertops and Butcher Blocks
