Grothouse Lumber Featured on Latest This Old House® Renovation Project

Grothouse Lumber, a premier manufacturer of custom-built wood surfaces, will be featured in an upcoming episode of the PBS home improvement television series This Old House®. The episode marks the second appearance for the Lehigh Valley based wood surfaces manufacturer.

Grothouse was selected to manufacture a wood island countertop for a renovation project in Newton Centre, MA. The project, located just west of Boston, involved the complete renovation of a 1915 Dutch Colonial Revival home as part of the This Old House® 30th anniversary season.

This Old House Newton Center ProjectGrothouse constructed a 2½-inch thick Sapele Mahogany island countertop as the centerpiece of the home’s newly-renovated kitchen. The episode, taped November 4, features owner Paul Grothouse installing the island top and describing the benefits of the wood surface as part of the kitchen design.

“It’s an incredible honor to be included in another episode of This Old House,” stated owner Paul Grothouse. “It is one of the most well-respected home improvement resources currently available, so for us to be considered as a supplier and participant is phenomenal.”

The end-grain design of the island, which is built using small pieces of wood standing on end, is an incredibly durable construction style meant for heavy use. Paired with a food-grade mineral oil finish, the surface is ideal for cutting, chopping, and general food preparation.

Grothouse was previously featured as part of a 2008 episode of This Old House®. The project, located in Newton, MA, included a large end grain teak island top with Grothouse’s custom Super Double Roman edge profile. A portion of the 2008 episode was filmed at the Grothouse manufacturing facility in Germansville, PA.

The latest episode will begin airing in early January. Interested individuals can find the air times by visiting the This Old House® website and clicking on the link for “Show Descriptions” listed next to “Newton Centre Project 2009.”
